You May Discuss in HOT

Canadian Visions of the Erzgebirge

The Embassy of Canada in Germany and the organizers of the exhibition You May Dream in HOT invite you to a panel discussion in the exhibition space. The evening will explore ideas of “foreign worlds,” cultural stereotypes, and Karl May’s legacy in today’s context. Artists, scholars, and guests from Canada will join the conversation.

The discussion will be moderated by Anne Ramstorf, a journalist with experience in the participatory Fishbowl format – a method that opens the conversation to audience contributions.

The keynote speaker will be Prof. Dr. Christoph Vatter (University of Jena), who will provide insights into how social imaginations are formed – and how we can critically reflect upon them.

Questions to be explored:

  • Can we still imagine foreign worlds as “freely” as in Karl May’s time?

  • How do cultural stereotypes continue to shape us today?

  • What perspectives can Canadian artists bring to the Ore Mountains – and how might these foster new self-understandings within the region?

The evening will close with an informal exchange over a glass of Canadian wine.

👉 The main language of the event will be English. Please let us know if you would like interpretation into German or Czech.

Speakers and Guests:

  • Andreas Barth, Silberbüchse e.V.

  • Katharina Fichtner, Cultural Attaché, Embassy of Canada to Germany
